City of Nanaimo announces winners of Youth Poetry Contest

The contest is an initiative run by Nanaimo’s current Youth Poet Laureate in collaboration with the Vancouver Island Regional Library.

Participants were asked to create a poetic response to a book, poem or text that resonated with them and nearly a dozen entries were submitted.

First place was awarded to “Moon of the Crusted Snow by Taya Hleck, second place went to “A Fight for Love by Emma Dupere and third place was taken by “Stanley’s Shocking Summer by Cora Setch.

Mayor Leonard Krog congratulated the poets “As we celebrate our city’s youth and turn a spotlight to their literary talents, we appreciate their unique perspectives. The youth in our community are telling our stories.”

The winners can be viewed on the city of Nanaimo website, or you can stop in at the Harbourfront VIRL branch where all submitted poems will be on display.
