City of Nanaimo brings back biking event for the spring season

A week-long event encouraging the use of bicycles makes its return to Nanaimo at the beginning of June.

GoByBike runs from June 2-9 in the Harbour City, with celebration stations set up each day in different locations around town.

Mayor Leonard Krog is encouraging people to not only participate in the event but encourage more people to bike to wherever they need to go.

“Instead of only celebrating ‘biking to work’, let’s celebrate biking everywhere; it’s a smart, healthy and green way to go anywhere, any time.”

The event starts Saturday, June 2 at Maffeo Sutton Park from 4-6 p.m. with a kick-off and bike drive.

Locations set up around town for the week include stops at Westwood Lake, The Steve Smith Bike Park, and Lower Colliery Dam.

It ends June 9 with the Pride Parade, where riders can decorate their bikes and take part in the parade.

Registration for the event is free.
