Development permit for commercial car wash near Country Clube Centre passes through Nanaimo city council

A vacant lot at a busy Nanaimo intersection is getting a new business.

A development permit for a commercial car wash passed through Nanaimo city council on Monday, June 3, paving the way for construction to begin.

The land at 3180 Island Highway North near Country Club Centre and next to Dairy Queen, was home to a gas station that closed in 2014 and was then demolished.

Coun. Janice Perino said she’s glad to see some life come to the lot following the demolition of the building two years ago.

“I’m so pleased, it’s just a barren piece of cement and just so nice to see a business is going in there.”

The proposal went through the Design Advisory Panel in January previously, with the panel recommending more greenery on the property and finding a way to shield vehicle’s headlights from the highway traffic.

The developer resubmitted the plans with revisions that included additional trees to help block out headlights shining onto the road, which was approved by the panel.

The proposal has a two-lane pay station and more kiosks inside the building including an electrical room, universal washroom, and a staff room.

It is undetermined as to when construction will begin on the building.
