City of Nanaimo implements changes to Westwood Park

Changes are being implemented to parking in Westwood Park ahead of planned improvements scheduled for this fall and winter.

According to the city, the third gate will serve as access for boat launch traffic to the park at the end of Westwood Road.

In a media release, the city says they’ve planned the maintenance because of how much use residents get out of the park, and expansion is necessary for everyone to enjoy.

“Westwood Park is one of the busiest and most popular places to visit in Nanaimo,” they say. “The park is in the process of undergoing a variety of phase-based improvements over several years.”

The city says improvements began last year with a new accessible parking lot with a storm water management system and phase two is planned for later this year and will include several other improvements.

“A phase two project is planned for the fall and winter of 2024/25 and will include improvements to the first beach, the addition of shade, beach amenities and universal bathrooms,” they say.

Mayor Leonard Krog says the improvements were recommended by the majority of the community and now they’re being implemented.

“Access to Nanaimo’s waterfront is one of the most commonly requested community parks request,” he says. “Improvements to the beach and amenities at Westwood Lake Park will make water access easier and safer for fun, fitness and relaxation.”

Changes this week are temporary and the city says they’re there to help park users adapt to the changes that are on the way.
