Eight bus shelters in Nanaimo have been vandalized in what RCMP is calling a senseless act of wanton destruction.
Police say the incident happened overnight on July 31, when glass was smashed at the eight shelters, of which four are owned by transit officials with the Regional District of Nanaimo.

According to a media release, RDN officials were alerted to the damage of the four bus shelters on Aug. 1.
All the shelters are in Nanaimo’s downtown bus exchange, including one on Norwell Drive on the east side of the Country Club Mall, and the other two are around Highway 19A near the Rutherford Road intersection.
Reserve constable Gary O’Brien says there is little to no information available on the incident, but it is under investigation.
“At this time, we have little to go on as no witnesses or suspects have been identified,” he says. “Currently, investigators are going to each location to determine if there are CCTV cameras that may have captured the events as they happened.”

It is estimated damage to the shelters will cost thousands of dollars to replace.
If anyone has information, they’re asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP’s non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
