Nanoose Fire Department welcomes new vehicle to its fleet

Nanoose firefighters are getting a new truck which is designed to increase response time and meet unique challenges across neighbouring communities.

The Regional District of Nanaimo invested over one million dollars for the new engine which they say will aid in rural firefighting efforts for the next 20 to 25 years.

According to the district the truck was designed from specifications and input from the NVFD and RDN fire services and can hold up to 800 gallons of water, six firefighters, and storage for several ladders in the event of an emergency.

Director for Area E Bob Rogers says the new truck is a welcome sight and will be put to good use.

“I’m delighted to see the arrival of this important addition to Nanoose Bay Volunteer Fire Department’s firefighting resources,” he says. “It will greatly assist the dedicated firefighters who serve our community in fire and emergency response.”

Fire Chief Leo Groenewegen says the truck will replace the one that is nearing its end of life and will be the pride of the region.

“Our new fire engine has been designed to support our community’s fire protection and emergency response needs,” he says. “With the new equipment comes decades of dedicated and reliable service to our residents and mutual aid partners in the Oceanside area.

“It’s a welcome and much-needed addition to our fleet.”

Over $650,000 of the cost for the engine was paid from the Growing Community Funds, with $438,550 coming from reserves.
