Urban Forest Plan phase two plan in Gibsons opens to public

The second phase of the Urban Forest Plan in Gibsons is officially open for community members to have their say in shaping the final version, and the vision for the region.

According to the town, the plan manages a mixture of native and non-native trees growing in natural and artificial environments and follows the municipality’s goals for adapting to climate change.

They say urban forests play a key role in every municipality and local ecosystems as they adapt to a changing environment.

“Trees and forest ecosystems regulate air temperature, sequester carbon, and return water to the soil, buffering our community from impacts like high temperatures and heavy rainfalls,” they say. “Trees provide direct benefits to human health and well-being and enhance the livability of neighbourhoods.”

According to the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment, urban forests also growing on streets and in parks provide vital environmental and social benefits.

The town says there are several benefits for Gibsons, including stormwater management, water purification, improved air quality, noise reduction and economic value.
