SCRD reduces carbon footprint with installation of heat pumps in Sechelt

Three heat pumps have been installed at the Sechelt Aquatic Centre, and the SCRD says a fourth is close to being finished.

According to the district, the heat pumps will help keep the pools warm while reducing the amount of natural gas being used to help with energy conservation measures and reducing the SCRD’s environmental footprint.

They add the buildings count for a significant number of emissions across the region, and having these pumps installed it’ll help reduce the total carbon output.

“Buildings account for 54 per cent of the SCRD’s corporate greenhouse gas emissions,” they say. “The $250,000 project will reduce the total corporate carbon pollution by an estimated 15 per cent, equivalent of a pickup truck driving from Vancouver to Halifax and back 61 times.”

They say the project is part of the district’s plan to reduce carbon pollution by 20 per cent from SCRD services by next year, and 45 per cent by 2030 from 2019 levels.
