The City of Nanaimo says don’t worry if you notice a strange colour in your water, it’s just them flushing the mains.
The engineering and public works department will be working to make sure all sediment is removed from the pipes to ensure drinking water is fresh, and the city says residents may experience short moments of discolouration when they turn the taps on.
“While this program is underway, water users may see short periods of low pressure and water may be discoloured,” they say. “Water discolouration during the flushing program is temporary and is not a health hazard.”
Mayor Leonard Krog says this process is completely normal and ensures healthy, clean drinking water in the city.
“The water flushing program removes any sediment that can build up over time, ensuring the highest quality drinking water for Nanaimo,” he says. “Crews will begin flushing water mains in the downtown core and move out from there.”
Flushing is expected to start on Mar. 2.
