The Sunshine Coast RCMP says scammers recently took advantage of a couple of locals, getting away with several thousand dollars.
The police say a Sechelt resident reported being scammed of more than $9284 by someone claiming to be a Bell Mobility representative who was able to get the victim’s banking information.
A Roberts Creek resident was recruited by an employment agency offering a job conducting hotel reviews and transferred $7000 into a bitcoin crypto wallet through WhatsApp.
The RCMP says another scammer was not as successful after contacting a Sechelt resident with the parent or grandparent scam.
The caller told them their son caused a serious car accident and needed money to get out of jail, but the resident became suspicious and wasn’t tricked.
“Fraud is everywhere. It’s on our cell phones, whether we’re getting a text message or an email, or on social media where we get a message from someone that we think we know,” according to Jeff Horncastle, the client and communications outreach officer for the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
New scams pop up all the time and threaten people of all ages.
