You can learn new strategies to deal with climate change through a speaker series.
Starting today, the Blueact Marine Society is holding the Climate Action Speaker Series, a series of nine presentations aiming to help you lower your carbon footprint and to be more resilient against droughts, floods, and fires.
Aquatic ecologist and society member David Marmerick says this series started after the group held a two-day climate fair in Gibsons last September.
“We had 15 exhibitors, 20 panelists, and about 300 people attending,” said Marmerick.
“It was really successful, and then people said they would like more practical information about what we can do individually and collectively.”
The Society says these presentations have a variety of topics including how to lower greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy efficiency, and how to lower property and health risks from fire and smoke.
For the fire and smoke presentation, Marmerick says it comes as many people live close to forested areas in Gibsons.
“It’s been increasingly drier and hotter over the last several years. There have been a few fires that have been contained, but it is a risk” said Marmerick.
“In 2017, our smoke detector went off at 4:00 a.m. just from the amount of smoke from various fires, so it’s good to know how to keep your lungs healthy when there is a lot smoke around.”
The presentation will see David McIIwraith from Firesmart and Maura Brown from UBC share strategies on how to make your home more resistant to fire and how to improve air quality in the event of smoke.
Marmerick hopes people learn by doing things, they feel less despair about the climate crisis and more hopeful.
The presentations are free, all taking place in the Coastal Room at Gibsons Public Market, running on select Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
